✦The map of Jyotish
01

Graha tells you what force is acting. Rashi describes how that force expresses itself. Bhava tells you where in life the expression is experienced. Keeping these three layers separate is the first discipline of chart reading.

02

For example, Mars is the Graha. If Mars occupies Gemini, Gemini modifies the style of Mars. If that placement falls in the tenth Bhava, the resulting pattern is examined in work, responsibility and public action.

03

A useful shorthand is: Graha = actor, Rashi = style, Bhava = stage. It prevents a common beginner error: treating a planet, sign and house as interchangeable concepts.

04

House ownership adds another layer. A planet carries the agenda of the houses it rules into the house where it sits. This is why the same Mars in Gemini can produce different results for different ascendants.

05

Always distinguish a sign number from a house number. In a North Indian chart houses stay fixed while signs move according to Lagna; in a South Indian chart signs stay fixed while the Lagna marker tells you where the first house begins.

06

A sound first reading asks: which planet, in which sign, in which house, ruling which houses, and influenced by which planets? Only after that structure is clear should timing be added.

07

A prediction should therefore never be made from the planet alone. Check sign, house, house lord, aspects, dispositors, relevant Vargas and the active timing period before drawing a conclusion.
