☉The nine Grahas
01

The nine Grahas are the principal actors used in Jyotish. Their natural significations provide the vocabulary from which interpretation begins.

02

Surya relates to identity, vitality, authority and visibility. Chandra describes the responsive mind, emotional habits and nourishment. Mangala supplies initiative, courage, heat and conflict; Budha handles discrimination, speech, trade and calculation.

03

Guru signifies knowledge, counsel, expansion, children and principles, while Shukra relates to attraction, agreements, aesthetics, comforts and relationships. Shani concentrates experience through duty, delay, endurance, boundaries and long-term consequence.

04

Rahu and Ketu are lunar nodes rather than physical planets, yet Jyotish treats them as Grahas because of their strong role in interpretation and timing. Rahu often amplifies appetite, novelty and unconventional experience, while Ketu can signify separation, inwardness and past familiarity.

05

Natural signification is only the starting point. A Graha functions differently according to Lagna, house lordship, sign dignity, conjunctions, aspects, Nakshatra and Dasha.

06

Separate natural nature from functional role. A naturally benefic planet can govern difficult houses for a particular Lagna, while a naturally challenging planet can become constructive through lordship and placement.

07

When studying a planet, build a profile rather than attaching a single adjective to it. This makes later synthesis far more reliable.
